lyrics

i walk into the little store attached to the gas station after holding the door for the guy in the green t shirt and the green shorts and wondering if he would thank me. he does not, but he greets the clerks, two middle aged women, one tall with tall hair and eyes that open up tall, the other small, scrunched up, with dark hair, and doesn't have braces but i almost remember her having braces. i look around for the coffee pot while the guy who didn't thank me says how are you to the tall clerk. i linger by the counter a moment while the two clerks finish part of the conversation they'd been having before we walked in, me first, holding the door. i ask if they have coffee and the tall clerk says "no, i'm sorry- you can go across the street to dunkin' donuts though". "don't go to dunkin' donuts" interjects the smaller clerk with the dark hair and thin lips. "go to Mcdonald's. it's cheaper and it's not watered down". really? i'm incredulous. i've drunk a lot of dunkin' donuts coffee and a lot of mcdonald's coffee, many cups of both, and Mcdonald's coffee always tastes watery to me. i tell them that i think Mcdonald's coffee is usually water. what's the vendetta against dunkin donuts? "we used to work there" responds te tall clerk with the really open eyes. "we both used to work there" says the shorter clerk who likes Mcdonald's. "I don't have a problem with it" says the tall hair clerk "i drink it every day". she says this like she is confessing a little something. then i smile and make a joke that goes "it looks like you guys have some stuff to work out amongst yourselves!" and they smile and laugh ebcause it's a nice innocuous joke. then we say have a good one and I go across the street to dunkin' donuts and get a small black coffee and i ask for dark roast.
